What does Will think of when Buck tells him his tail is showing in Chapter Two?

When Buck tells him that his tail is showing, Will puts his hand on the gun and thinks of it like an extra backbone and vertebra. Will thinks about moving the gun to the front, but thinks about how Shawn used to say dogs keep their tail tucked between their legs as a sign of fear and signal of bluff.
