Why doesn't Gus try to hide the horses they bring back from Mexico in the novel, Lonesome Dove?

Jasper Fant told Gus that Pedro Flores, their main Mexican bandit rival, has died. Without a threat from Pedro, Gus feels no inclination to go to any extra effort to hide the horses.
