How did dustmen and mudlarks help each other?

They belonged to mutual aid societies like Odd Fellowes, Foresters or Old Friends. These groups collected a small amount from each member and used the money to aid the sick, widows, orphans, the elderly or those who were disabled. They also helped those injured on the job, who were routinely fired.
