In chapter ten, the girls create a secret club. The club members are modeled after male characters in Dickens' The Pickwick Papers. This shows that the girls want to explore what it's like to have a male role in life. Jo's induction of a male, Laurie, to the secret club later on shows that Jo especially wants to break through traditional male/female stereotypes.
