Marmee lets the girls skip their studies and chores for an entire week. The girls have fun at first, but later find that time is dragging on. The girls begin to argue and the family bird dies from neglect. Finally, Marmee herself takes a day off and gives Hannah the day off too. The girls are forced to fend for themselves. Although the events of the day are disastrous, the girls learn that it pays to work and to help others, not to be lazy.
