How, in chapter six, do the girls' attitudes toward their neighbors grow and adapt?

The girls view getting to know the Laurences as a major obstacle. In a reference to The Pilgrim's Progress, the girls call the Laurence home "the palace beautiful". They are intimidated by it. Later on all of the girls feel more comfortable with the neighbors, except for Beth. Beth and Mr. Laurence have to make a special effort to get to know each other. He misses his granddaughter and Beth reminds him of her. Beth, meanwhile, is the most timid and scared of the March sisters.
