Jo wins a prize for a sensational story that she submits to a newspaper, but it's a novel that she really wants to write. So, she uses the prize money to send Marmee and Beth on a vacation, almost like she doesn't feel comfortable keeping money from such an unworthy endeavor. She later sells her novel, but not without a lot of editing.
