While the March girls were feeling the effects of having little money in chapter one, in chapter two they are reminded that some people are worse off. The story also illustrates how helping others can come back to you in a positive way. This is pointed out when the girls have a large Christmas dinner, courtesy of Mr. Laurence, who heard that they helped the Hummel family. The girls felt richer because they were together and had good food and a nice neighbor.
