Who is Novalis from Little Birds: Erotica and what is their importance?

Novalis appears in the story, The Maja. He is a painter, who loves to paint his wife in the nude. As a result, his wife becomes so self conscious that he begins painting her while she sleeps. Novalis eventually falls out of love with his wife, preferring his paintings to the real thing.
