Who is Fay from Little Birds: Erotica and what is their importance?

Fay appears in the story, Saffron, in which she marries an older man, who she discovers is making love to the colored help. Fay is distressed by the fact that her husband cannot make love to her because she's white. This problem will soon be remedied, however, when Fay is covered with the scent of Saffron causing her husband to comment on the fact that she smells like a black woman.
