What does Leaphorn find out about the Mercedes driver in the novel, Listening Woman?

When Leaphorn finds out the Mercedes has not passed the roadblock, he goes back along the road, locating tracks showing a car turning off the highway. Further on, Leaphorn finds that the car is empty. The driver has taken off on foot, and some more tracks show he has a dog with him.
