How does the setting propel the plot forward?
In Chapter 23, Lily finds herself rowing out toward the marshes in order to save Albert. The swells toss Albert's boat around like a toy, creating tension, as Lily becomes frightened. Relieved to see that Albert is rowing toward a ship further out in the bay, things suddenly shft again, as Albert is thrown out of the rowboat by the crashing of the turbulent water.
