Why did Virginia place the pear blossoms in a bottle in the story, Like Jake and Me?

After placing the blossoms in the bottle, the pears form within. Virginia wants to fill the bottle with pear nectar and trick her sister into attempting to figure out how the pears got inside the tiny mouth of the bottle.
