Why is Tovah's quote "A girl must not depend on her looks, it is better to be clever" in "Letters from Rifka" important.

I am doing a book report and I am very confused about this question.

Looks are temporary and are not the basis for lasting success in anything. A clever person always has a brain to depend on to do things.
