Why does Jerry Ventura believe the kids were in his room in Chapter 13?

Jerry Ventura questions Stevie about being in his room. Stevie denies being in his room, even though Jerry thinks the kids were in his room looking for a scoop for their stories, once he finds out they are the student reporters representing the Final Four.
