What is foreshadowed in Chip's conversation with Stevie and Susan Carol in Chapter 10?

Chip telling Stevie and Susan Carol that they misunderstood what they heard foreshadows Chip telling them a lie to keep them from outing him and Professor Whiting. It appears as if someone is trying to set Chip and his father up by changing Chips' transcript so that he could blackmail Chip.
