Why does Nicholas say that the family took Eric for granted in the memoir, Lament for a Son?

Nicholas believes that they took Eric for granted. Maybe everyone takes one another for granted. Life's routines distract, pursuits make people oblivious, anxieties and sorrows keep people from thinking. People do not treasure one another enough.
