Suzette is adventurous... unafraid of the norm. Her mother, on the other hand, is someone who rarely ventures outside of her safe space, she is frightened by things outside the scope of her safe place... walking and sunways are to be feared. In context, Suzette's mother is initially presented as an immigrant from Haiti who has been unable to acclimate herself to life in New York. By the end of the story, however, Suzette is astonished to learn that she has been completely wrong.
