Hernández’s tone also varies in the memoir. In general, Hernández’s tone is quite elevated and she deploys a number of sophisticated word choices. For example, Hernández describes the landscape on the other (American) side of the border like this: “It looked like a desert, but it wasn’t. In the distance, there were vegetated fields that glowed with both pale and flamboyant greens” (106).
