What is the significance of the bell that Satsuki gives Hitoshi?

Satsuki gives Hitoshi the bell as an afterthought, however he treasures it. He carries it with him everywhere. Satsuki begins to believe that she hears it even if Hitoshi is not around. The bell becomes much more significant of a symbol in Satsuki's life when Hitoshi dies.
