The individual who can help or ruin a country seems to be a recirring idea in this book. Leopold was a powerful king of a European nation, and his personal wealth was vast. He ruled a giant colony with the willing assistance of many accomplices. All involved realized great profits from the ruthless exploitation of the Congo. The vast international power structure would appear to be beyond the reach of any single man; similar paradigms exist throughout history to the present. And yet, as the text illustrates, one man can make a difference.
