Patton delivered a speech in the British countryside to the men of his Third Army on June 5, 1944. Patton said that the real hero was a man who fought even though he was scared. A real man never let his fear of death overwhelm him in performing his duty. He also said that battle was the most magnificent competition that a human being could indulge in. Patton reminded the troops that the enemy was just as frightened as they were and that enemy were not "supermen" (12).
