In Chapter 12 what happened to the town of Assenois?

When Abrams of the Fourth Armored Division came to Assenois, Abrams did not simply race through the town. Instead he decided to level it. Every building that might hide Germans was destroyed. Then the artillery observer was hit before the barrage could be called off. Three hundred and sixty rounds of artillery shells finished the destruction of the town.
