Part Seventeen of the contains echoes of other stories of humans being swallowed by giant monsters, particularly that of Jonah and the whale in the Bible. These Bible stories are often metaphorical examinations of the tensions between humankind and nature, with the truths learned by those swallowed representing truths that humankind can learn from the natural world.
