Who is Ebenezer Pierce? How did the man affect Slocum's future?

Ebenezer Pierce was a whaling captain. Slocum met Pierce and soon discovered that the captain had a boat for sale. Pierce offered Slocum the opportunity to become the commander of his own boat if only Slocum would make the necessary repairs to the vessel.
