Shortly before Slocum arrived at Rodriguez, the island's Abbe began to tell his congregation about the coming of the Antichrist. When the islanders spotted the Spray, they immediately took the Abbe's words to heart and mistakenly referred to Slocum as the Antichrist. Although the governor managed to calm most of the people, some refused to leave their homes until Slocum had left the island.
