There were violent gales of wind in and around the Cape, averaging one every 36 hours. When Slocum arrived at the Cape on Christmas Day 1897, the weather continued to toss the little sloops to and fro. Slocum said, "On this day, the Spray was trying to stand on her head, and she gave me every reason to believe that she would accomplish the feat before night." (Chapter 18, Page 241)
