Slocum was very experienced in sailing close to home. Taking a three year voyage around the world was another thing entirely. Slocum's family and friends were concerned particularly since Slocum insisted on taking the voyage alone. Despite the concern of others, Slocum took almost no advice and was certain that he knew a better way.
