How did Slocum's fortune change as the Spray approached Cape Horn?

Slocum was dismayed when the Spray had to be pointed in the direction of Cape Horn. The boat had sustained damage. Slocum's fortune seemed to change when he realized that he would be able to make the repairs to the boat. Slocum also encountered fair weather and he was able to right his course and log 20 miles per day.
