The main conflict of the novel actually contains two parts. First, Johnny is in direct conflict with himself. When we first meet Johnny, he is selfish, arrogant, and prideful. Over the course of the novel, and as a result of his injury, Johnny must learn to put his pride (and anger) in his pocket and grow as a young man. Through his experiences, Johnny becomes a lovable, giving, caring, and generous young man, who looks to others before himself.
The second conflict is the colonists war against the British..... the start of the American Revolution.
