Why does Joey tell his mother about his past hurts while they are traveling to Pittsburgh?

Joey decides to tell his mother about all the ways her actions have hurt him in the past while they are on the bus to Pittsburgh because he has learned that talking about these things helps them to become smaller in his mind and makes him feel better.
