In terms of upbringing why does the author say he questions the Jesus represented in the New Testament?

The author claims that as an artisan, Jesus and his family would have been very unlikely to have been exposed to education and therefore most likely illiterate. Therefore it is difficult to imagine the status the New Testament states Jesus achieved.
