Who is Bessie Lee from Jane Eyre?

Bessie is the nurse or governess for the Reed children. We quickly learn that this occupation isn't a prime position, as she quickly garners Jane's sympathy.... remember, Jane was only a child. Bessie disappears from Jane's life for a long period before running into her at Lowood, where Bessie updates Jane on what has transpired since she left.
