For Jim, the pencil is symbolic of empowerment. Although he procures the pencil at a cost, he carries it like a talisman throughout the novel. With the pencil, Jim has the opportunity to express himself in writing. Just feeling the pencil in his pocket reminds him of who he is and the voice he has.
