How does the author use foreshadowing in Jamaica Inn?

After arriving at the Jamaica Inn, Mary immediately recognizes the effect that alcoholism has had on her uncle, and in turn, the way the violence has effected her aunt. This discovery foreshadows Mary's plan to escape, taking her aunt with her.
