Why do the people of England prefer King Richard over Prince John in the novel, Ivanhoe?

The people of England prefer King Richard over his brother, Prince John, because Richard is seen as a fair ruler, whereas John attempts to desecrate and demean the Saxons. John is also greedy and has various methods for stealing land from the Saxon people.
