Grief plays a prominent role in every aspect of the novel—the plot, the characters, and the structure are all informed by the grief of losing Susannah. During the first novel in the series, Susannah is a large, vibrant figure. The tone of the first book is sweet and breezy, just like any other summer romance novel. However, it is revealed in the last few chapters of the first book that Susannah has cancer and is at risk of dying because of it. This novel picks up where it left off the following summer. At first, the novel presents a beautiful scene in which Belly and her family are at the beach house in Cousins with Susannah and her boys. However, the lovely moment is revealed to be a daydream, and the reality is grimmer than most YA Romance novels are willing to present: “I wasn’t in Cousins. Conrad and I weren’t together, and Susannah was dead. Nothing would ever be the same again” (2). This opening structure sets the stage for the role grief will play in shaping the rest of the novel.
