Who is Jim Hoyt, and what is his relationship to Lance?

Jim Hoyt owns a bike shop. Lance gets his very first bike from Jim's shop when he is seven years-old. The two become good friends, with Jim serving as a mentor for the young athlete. However, when Jim sees Lance get into fights and engage in reckless behavior, he takes away the young man's bike and car. Years go by before the two reconcile.
