Explain where Lance spends his youth and why he feels he does not fit in.

Lance's mother, Linda Mooneyham, gives birth to him when she is seventeen years old. She ends up raising her young son by herself, without the father's help. Her family, however, bands together to support her and Lance as much as possible. Though they cannot help out much financially, they provide plenty of love and emotional support. Linda works two jobs while raising her son.
