When Lance holds his first Ride for the Roses race, he is in the middle of signing autographs when a checkbook is placed in front of him. The man holding the checkbook asks, "How much do you want?" Lance realizes it's his old mentor, Jim Hoyt, whom he hasn't spoken with in a long while. Lance apologizes for his past behavior. The two men reconcile their differences and resume their friendship.
