Who is Susila MacPhail from Island and what is their importance?

Susila is Tom and Mary's mother. She is a widow, as her husband, Dugald, had died in a suspicious climbing accident. Although, Susila still lives with the grief caused by her husband's death, she is employed as a teacher and makes her own children her first priority.
