Why did Krakauer decide to introduce Chris' family so late in the story? How did this decision effect your sympathy with them (or lack thereof) now?

I think that Krakauer wants to establish Chris's personality before he goes into the background of Chris's life. Chris's abandonment of his family is not sympathetic to Chris so it was important that Krakauer establish some context for Chris before he delves into his family.
