The Desert
Much of the book involves Chris's time in the desert. The desert becomes a symbol of Chris's hubris in challenging the elements that he is really not prepared for. The desert foreshadows Chris's eventual demise when he challenges the Alaskan Wilderness.
Yellow Datsun
American's love their cars but Chris leaves it behind. The car symbolizes Chris's lack of concern for material possessions.
