Who was Denmen? To his credit, what did he realize?

Earl Denmen was a poverty-stricken Canadian (1947) who had the dream of climbing Everest. He was completely unskilled and unprepared for such a venture. When he finally made it to the steps of Everest he realized that he was way over his head and wisely retreated back to Darjeeling India.
