At the Court, the narrator interprets for a trial in which the defendant is the deposed president of an unnamed nation. The defendant’s name is never stated. The narrator feels an involuntary sense of connection with the defendant as she translates for him, although she remains keenly aware of the many atrocities for which he is likely responsible. The trial is eventually dismissed after the prosecution’s case collapses due to various technicalities. In the narrator’s final interaction with the defendant, the man tries to argue that the trial is simply an effect of circumstance rather than of actual morality.
