What is the author's style in the novel, Intimacies?

Because the novel’s protagonist is the sole narrator and point-of-view character, the author uses prose to reflect the narrator’s thought patterns and, presumably, her verbal/literary habits. The prose style is generally accessible and direct, while conveying the mixture between emotional detachment and emotional investment that defines the narrator’s interiority. For example, the narrator makes the following statements about her relationship to Adriaan and The Hague: “Adriaan was the reason why I wanted to stay in The Hague, or at least one of the reasons, though I was embarrassed to admit this even to myself—I did not like to think of myself as a woman who made decisions in this way, for a man. Particularly when things were still so nascent, and the situation so complicated” (29). These lines allow the reader insights into the narrator’s personal hopes and doubts.
