Dialogue is also central to the novel’s storytelling. Notably, the novel never uses quotation marked to demarcate dialogue. There are various possible reasons and effects of this choice. Notably, nearly all of the characters in the novel speak more than one language, and so they might be speaking in one of several different languages at any one time. Also, the lack of quotation marks has the counterintuitive effect of further highlighting the dialogue and emphasizing the thematic importance of language and communication as it relates to the narrative.
