What is Layla’s relationship with Jake like in Chapter 11?

Layla and Jake have already met and introduced themselves, but now when Layla asks Jake to make a phone call, he delivers a burner cell phone to her, and allows her to make a five-minute call to David. She does not trust him, but he is helping her, so she is wary but goes along.
