What danger does Layla put herself in while getting home?

Layla stays with David till 17 minutes after the curfew, and on the way home, they hear a voice yell stop. Layla runs, and David stops to distract the man who called. Later, David says that it was a neighbor, and David told him that he was with Ashley, his new lab partner since Layla left school.
