Layla’s parents know more about history than she does, and they are willing to go along with the Exclusion Guards’ demands, because they know what they can do to them. Layla is young and her experience is closer to her skin, so she chafes at the outrage of the forced relocation. She breaks down in tears, and remains mouthy toward the guards, even though her parents keep cautioning her.
